John Auld

He Loved This Place

As a retired professor at the University of Guelph, and now a volunteer gardener, John Auld has a long history with the Arboretum. His friend Fred, who passed away in 2022, was a volunteer gardener as well. Together they would work in the gardens, and when they weren’t on duty, they spent a lot of time in the various Arboretum spaces, walking and talking, or sitting on a bench relaxing with a thermos of coffee. In this story, John shares with us some of his favourite memories, and what it means to share this space with the people who are important to us.
Interview by Kelly Hughes, CTS*3020 student, University of Guelph.
